The Somerton Local History Group was formed in 2010 to collect and record the history of the village the church and the people.
Our first venture was to restore the church to its former glory and we were fortunate to receive a Heritage Lottery Grant which enabled us to establish a website and begin work on St. James.
Since then and with more help from the HLF we have helped in the cleaning of the reredos and the Fermor memorials, lighting of the Fermor chapel, restoration of the hatchments and the 17thcentury clock. We have also produced a guide to the church and a booklet on the importance of Catholicism in the village during the Fermors ownership.
Each year to coincide with Open Heritage Days we put on an exhibition and these have included the First World War, the Rural Post Office, Farming and Curiosities at St. James. We have also arranged talks, films and guided walks around the village.
At present the Group consists of just 3 people and we should like to get more villagers involved. If you are interested please get in touch. The website address is somertonoxon.co.uk.
